Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health of Qatar today inaugurated phase two of Hamad General Hospital’s state-of-the-art surgical services expansion.

The second phase of the surgical services expansion, which is part of Hamad Medical Corporation’s  (HMC)  busiest expansion program in more than a decade, includes 16 rooms to receive patients from wards, 30 recovery rooms, a dedicated nurses’ station, conference room, and enhanced staff areas.

Each of the new patient rooms is fitted with the latest monitoring equipment and other facilities which will ensure the highest level of patient safety.

The expansion of Hamad General Hospital’s surgical services is part of an ambitious and comprehensive plan to increase capacity and revitalize the country’s largest and busiest hospital. The surgical services facility is situated adjacent to the large-scale trauma and emergency re-development site, which is currently under construction.

“This new phase in the expansion is an integral part of HMC’s commitment to extend its surgical, trauma, and emergency health infrastructure with innovative services and amenities. It is also part of a commitment to enhance the hospital’s surgical capacity and capabilities, providing the most advanced techniques available to Qatar’s population,” said Dr. Al Kuwari.

“These new facilities are purposely designed to enhance the patient experience,” said Dr. Al Kuwari. “They highlight the fact that HMC continues to provide the latest technologically-advanced operating rooms and surgical equipment, as well as restorative pre- and post-operative rooms that emphasize patient safety and comfort.”

HMC’s, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Abdulla Al Ansari, said the new facilities met and exceeded world standards for patient safety and medical equipment.

“With additional capacity for patient recovery after surgery, as well as extra space, this expansion will greatly enhance the efficiency of our operating theater complex by improving patient flow. This will also directly impact on our patients’ pathways, making it a better overall experience for them,” said Dr. Al Ansari.

The first phase of HMC’s surgical services expansion was officially opened in 2016 by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, and houses 20 ultramodern surgical theaters, a 19-bed Trauma Intensive Care Unit, a 15-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and three hybrid operating rooms that provide state-of-the-art real-time imaging through CT, MRI, Brain Lab and Artis Zeego imaging technology.

Maria Sharapova has defended her ability to go long into matches after losing on three sets in the Qatar Total Open first round on Monday at Doha.

Sharapova looked to be cruising to victory over Monica Niculescu in Doha. But the Russian let slip a one-set lead to crash out in two hours, 38 minutes. The defeat was a surprise for the former Wimbledon champion. And she insisted she has the capacity to still compete deep into matches.

"I thought I did a really good job in the first set and a half, but that's obviously not enough to win the match," Sharapova said.

"I did a good job of winning the longer rallies, even though that's not really what I wanted to get myself into. So physically I felt good.

“I just got pretty passive in the end and starting making too many errors.” Sharapova was downed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 by former world No 28 Niculescu and hit a staggering 52 unforced errors during the match.

The defeat comes after she crashed out in the third round of the Australian Open but was adamant she knows how to put things right.

"I love playing in three-set matches, and I think I've thrived in them my career,” she said. “So I don't necessarily shy away from that challenge.

“I think I have to look at the tape and see why I started going back behind the baseline and not moving forward, not putting the pace on her."

Earlier, Dominika Cibulkova rallied past Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(8) 6-4 as she progressed to a second round meeting with France's seventh seed Caroline Garcia.

Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu eased past Lesia Tsurenko to set up a clash with sixth-seeded French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, while American qualifier CiCi Bellis advanced after Daria Kasatkina pulled out of their opener with an injury.

Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Anna Blinkova also reached the second round.

After being given an opportunity to assist an elderly blind man, she eventually finds herself agreeing to marry him, to get back to Algeria.

The Seen and Unseen – 10-year-old Tantri realises she will not have much more time with her twin brother Tantra. This situation opens up something in her mind: she keeps waking up in the middle of the night from a dream and seeing Tantra. She experiences a magical journey and an emotional relationship through body expressions, finding herself between reality and imagination, loss and hope.

What Walaa Wants – A young woman named Walaa dreams of being a policewoman on the Palestinian Security Forces, with a uniform, her own bank account, and independence. But her own rebellious behaviour, and a complicated relationship with her mother, stand in the way.

A flagship of the festival, Panorama has 47 films from 40 countries this year, including 16 directorial debuts. Forum places special emphasis on documentary forms in 2018 and has been expanded this year under the theme, ‘A Mechanism Capable of Changing Itself’ and to have 34 film and video works as well as 15 installations from 27 countries.
