Shehroze Kashif, 19, from Lahore, Pakistan became the youngest Pakistani mountaineer to conquer  8,848.86 metres high Mount Everest last Tuesday.

Shehroze developed his passion in trekking from his very young age encouraged by his father, Kashif Abbas. Kashif Abbas and any of his family members has no interest in mountaineering.

He spent over a month in accomplishing his target. In an interview to media, he said that strongest thing in the world is the human mind, 'mountaineering does not ask for compromise, mountaineering asks for sacrifice'. Fitness is utmost important and specially in decision making at heights, he said.

He is also the youngest Pakistani is his age 17, climbed Broad Peak, 8,047m, which earned him ' The Broad Boy'. Teen in his age of 11, trekked 3,885 m Makra Peak, followed by 4,080 m Musa Ka Musalla.

Later, he did the Gondogor La, K2 Base Camp trek at the age of 14 and at age 15 completed 'Khurdo Pin Pass', 5,800 m. To his profile added at his age of 18, he did Khusar Gang, a 6,050m peak Alpine style.

Expedition cost his father Rupees 10 million, without any government backing or from private sector.

Pakistani mountaineer Nazir Sabir was the first Pakistani to climb Everest on May 17, 2000. Years later, Hasan Sadpara, Samina Baig, Abdul Jabbar Bhatti and Mirza Ali reached the top of the tallest 8,000m peak. So far, all Pakistani summits have been done with the use of supplemental oxygen.

Pakistan, Nepal and China are home to  World's 14 highest peaks, the 8,000ers. World’s tallest mountain Everest, 8,848 m is located in Nepal, Pakistan is home to five 8,000 m peaks - K2, Gasherbrum 1 and 2, Broad Peak and Nanga Parbat.

Alpine approach in mountaineering is where no supplementary oxygen, packing light, zero reliance on fixed ropes, thus making riskier for climber over 6,000m  as the altitude increases.

Alpine (Expedition or “siege” style) relies on fixed ropes set along the climbing routes by Sherpas/HAPs and the use of bottled oxygen.

Above 8,000 m, pressure of Oxygen is insufficient to sustain human life for a longer span, known as 'Death Zone', most relying on bottled oxygen.

Pakistan on Monday reported more than 3,700 new coronavirus cases, the highest single-day toll since May 22, as the Delta variant is spreading across the country, according to official data.

In the past 24 hours, the country registered 3,752 additional infections, bringing the caseload to over 1 million, the Health Ministry count showed.

On May 21, Pakistan recorded 4,007 cases that slowly declined to 663 on June 21, but has seen spikes again since July 6.

The fatalities also rose as the country reported 32 more deaths, raising the total number to 23,048, while 927,599 people have so far recovered.

The authorities already warned that Pakistan could move to the fourth wave if the public avoids following safety precautions.

"This Indian variant has caused devastation in countries in the region. ... Do not risk your own & others lives," Asad Umar, the federal minister and head of the nation’s anti-virus strategy, tweeted last week, urging people to follow the standard operating procedures and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan also called the Delta strain “the biggest concern." "After a downslide, infections are on the rise again. We fear that the Delta variant could strike Pakistan," he said in a televised address, adding: "I appeal to the nation to wear masks and take protective measures."

Seoul, 22 July 2021 (Yonhap News)

South Korea's daily new coronavirus cases hit a fresh high of over 1,800 on Thursday with mass infections from a virus-hit naval unit, while authorities are increasingly inclined to extend the toughest virus restrictions in the wider Seoul area amid no signs of a letup.

The country added 1,842 COVID-19 cases, including 1,533 local infections, raising the total caseload to 184,103, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). The country added three more COVID-19 deaths, raising the death toll to 2,063.

The latest figure was the highest ever since the country confirmed the first case in January 2020, breaking the previous record of 1,784 on Wednesday.

Thursday's imported cases included 270 patients from the 301-member Cheonghae unit, which conducted an anti-piracy mission in waters off Africa, bringing the total number of such cases to a record high of 309.

It is the first time that the nation's imported cases surpassed 100.

Concerns are also rising over the highly contagious delta variant, which has fast become the nation's dominant variant by taking up 76 percent of 1,255 locally transmitted variant cases over the past week.

With no signs of cases abating, health authorities are widely expected to extend the semi-lockdown measures in the greater Seoul area for another two weeks.

Istanbul, 21 July 2021 (Anadolu News)

Ankara will continue its efforts to secure international recognition for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Turkey’s president said on Wednesday.

“We will make every possible effort to ensure recognition of the Turkish Cypriot state as soon as possible,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a video address to members of the Justice and Development (AK) Party on the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

He stressed that the only demand of Turkish Cypriots in international talks on the Cyprus issue is for “their sovereign state status to be recognized,” a recognition currently only given by Turkey.

“All other offers and proposals are not valid anymore,” Erdogan added.

The Turkish president returned from a two-day visit to the TRNC on Tuesday, where he reiterated Ankara’s support for a two-state solution to the Cyprus issue and the need for both sides of the island to be recognized as equals.

“No one should expect the Turkish Cypriots to give up their equal status and sovereignty, and to accept to live as a minority as per the will of the Greek Cypriots,” Erdogan said at an event on the island, adding that the Turkish Cypriots would not compromise on their independence and freedom.

“First of all, the sovereign equality and equal status of the Turkish Cypriots should be confirmed. This is the key to the solution,” he said.

Cyprus has been mired in a decades-long dispute between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, despite a series of diplomatic efforts by the UN to achieve a comprehensive settlement.

Ethnic attacks starting in early 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots to withdraw into enclaves for their safety.

In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup aiming at Greece’s annexation led to Turkey’s military intervention as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots from persecution and violence. The TRNC was founded in 1983.

It has seen an on-and-off peace process in recent years, including a failed 2017 initiative in Switzerland under the auspices of guarantor countries Turkey, Greece, and the UK.

The Greek Cypriot administration entered the EU in 2004, the same year that Greek Cypriots thwarted the UN’s Annan plan to end the decades-long dispute.

Islamabad, 19 July 2021 (Daily Dawn)

Afghanistan on Sunday called back its ambassador and senior diplomats from Pakistan after the brief “kidnapping” of the Afghan envoy’s daughter in Islamabad.

"Following the abduction of the Afghan ambassador's daughter in Pakistan, the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan called back Afghanistan's ambassador and senior diplomats from Pakistan until all security threats are addressed including the arrest and trial of the perpetrators of abduction," the Afghan foreign ministry said in a statement.

It said an Afghan delegation will visit Pakistan soon to assess and follow up on the case and "all related issues", adding that "subsequent actions will follow based on the findings".

Ambassador Najibullah Alikhil’s daughter, Silsila, was abducted from Islamabad’s commercial hub by unidentified persons on Friday who also subjected her to torture.

She was returning home in the afternoon in a taxi after visiting a bakery in Islamabad's Blue Area when the driver picked up another man, who verbally abused and assaulted her. She was later dropped in an unconscious condition by the taxi driver on a roadside.

Her medical report confirmed that she had been physically assaulted.

Afghanistan's First Vice President Amrullah Saleh in a tweet said President Ashraf Ghani had issued instructions to recall the diplomats.

"The abduction of Afghan ambassador's daughter & her subsequent torture has wounded the psyche of our nation. Our national psyche has been tortured," he said.
