World No.1 Iga Swiatek successfully defended her title at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open on Saturday, sweeping past fourth-ranked Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-0 in the Doha final.
No.1 seed Swiatek topped No.2 seed Pegula to capture her first Hologic WTA Tour title of the year, and the 12th title of her career overall. Swiatek dropped only five games all week en route to the title.
"I'm really happy that I could kind of find more balance, comparing to how I felt at the beginning of the season," Swiatek said, after her win. "I think this tournament is going to give me a lot of confidence, but still, I want to take everything step by step. I'm just really happy that I could win this match today."horter, or on the other hand, play with more topspin so the wind is going to kind of take this ball even further," Swiatek said.
"So today I just kind of continued that, but I didn't really want to overanalyze that, and I just kind of played how my intuition told me. It's nice, because usually I'm basing everything on my tactics and on the technique that I'm working on. But here I felt like I could just reset that and play more freely without overthinking."
Swiatek had already lost to Pegula this year at United Cup, but the No.1 seed overwhelmingly avenged that defeat in the 1-hour and 9-minute Doha final. Swiatek now holds a 5-2 lead over Pegula in their head-to-head.
For the second year in a row, Doha is the site of Swiatek’s first title of the season. Last year, her Doha title run was the start of something big -- a 37-match winning streak, culminating in her second Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.
Swiatek also becomes the first player to defend a Hologic WTA Tour singles title since she won her second straight Rome title in May of last year.
Every game I was really focused, and that's the thing I'm most happy about, because at the beginning of the season I felt like my mind was kind of flying away sometimes," Swiatek said. "But here, the work we have put in with my coach on court and with Daria off the court, for sure, it just paid off, and I felt like everything is clicking."

Pakistan's prime minister plans to meet with tent manufacturers in his country in order to provide more shelter to people in southern Türkiye, where millions have been displaced by last week's massive twin earthquakes.
Shehbaz Sharif, who was in Türkiye after the magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes that struck the country on Feb. 6 and affected more than 13 million people across 11 provinces, told Anadolu in an exclusive interview that when he returns to Pakistan on Friday, he will meet with manufacturers and task them to produce winterized tents "as quickly as possible with the highest quality."
“And they will have to honor their commitments because our brothers and sisters in Türkiye are in dire need of tents,” Sharif pledged.
“We hope that by the end of this month, we will be able to send something like 1,300 tons of relief goods,” he said, adding that “in March, another 1700 tons and in April, about 600 tons of relief goods to be sent, with the bulk of this being winterized tents.”
Sharif said Pakistan and Türkiye “are like two souls and one heart,” adding that he immediately called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan when he heard about the earthquakes to offer condolences and whatever help his country needs during this difficult time.
“But this devastation is beyond imagination. It's a colossal loss. So, no amount of aid would be enough,” said Sharif.
“So, ever since, we have been able to transport more than 500 tons of relief goods for our Turkish brothers, particularly those affected by these shocks in the south of Türkiye, in the form of winterized tents, blankets, and other relief items, as well as rescue and medical teams,” he said.
“And I'm glad to share with you that our team was able to rescue at least 14 people from the rubble… Alhamdulillah, they're alive,” he added.
Sharif said Pakistan and Türkiye are like a family and “we will live and die together. That is a spirit. That is the motivation. That is the relationship, and it goes back to centuries.”
Türkiye aided Pakistan in the past
He said whenever Pakistan needed assistance, the Turkish government, people, and President Erdogan "went the extra mile to help their brothers and sisters, whether it was an earthquake in 2005, floods in 2010, or floods last year in Pakistan."
When floods hit Pakistan in 2010, Erdogan personally visited affected areas and Turkish organizations helped with rebuilding efforts, he added.
“And my sister, Madam Emine Erdogan, contributed her bracelet for the flood victims. What else can be the best example of generosity, and the highest level of empathy? It can only be done by brothers and sisters. That is spirit,” the prime minister said.
In this spirit of solidarity, Sharif called on Pakistanis to stand in complete solidarity with Türkiye.
Members of the Pakistani cabinet and parliament also donated a month's salary to earthquake victims, he added.
Urgent OIC meeting stressed
The Pakistan prime minister also suggested that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convene an emergency meeting to discuss and decide on an “immediate relief package for the people of Türkiye.”
"The international community must play a role. Because today is Türkiye, but God forbid, tomorrow could be another country. Today, Türkiye requires international support. Tomorrow, someone else may be in desperate need, and we will all pitch in to help," he said.
“We must do everything we can for the well-being of the people of Türkiye,” he stressed.
Sharif also said Turkish people raised nearly $6 billion through an aid campaign that was broadcasted on Turkish TV channels, calling it a “remarkable example of generosity, philanthropy, kind-heartedness, and consideration.”
“I think the people of Türkiye have earned the highest respect, not only from the people of Pakistan but globally. So, I think it's high time that the international community should come forward.”

At least 36,187 people were killed and over 108,000 injured by the two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye last week, the country's disaster agency said on Thursday in the latest figures from the natural disaster.
The Feb. 6 magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes, centered in the Kahramanmaras province, affected more than 13 million people across 11 provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa, and Elazig.
Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, also felt the strong tremors that struck Türkiye in the space of less than 10 hours.
More than 253,000 search and rescue personnel are currently working in the field, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said in a statement. At least 216,347 people have been evacuated from the quake-hit regions so far, AFAD added.
Condolences have poured in from around the world expressing solidarity with Türkiye, with many countries sending rescue teams and aid.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday said a total of 7,098 foreign personnel from 74 nations are currently continuing their efforts in the field.
Air bridge for life
Psychosocial support was provided to a total of 422,844 people, including 332,049 in the earthquake zone and 90,795 outside it.
Besides rescue teams, 3.2 million blankets, 283,410 tents, food, and psychological support teams were also sent to the affected areas, along with over 12,500 vehicles, including excavators, tractors, and bulldozers.
More than 2.6 million blankets and 48,271 housing container units have been sent to the 10 worst-hit provinces, said AFAD.
After the initial earthquake, an air bridge was established by the Turkish Armed Forces to deliver relief supplies and search and rescue teams to the region.
A large fleet of aircraft, including A-400Ms, carried search and rescue teams and vehicles to the region. Ambulance planes also use the air bridge.
Rescue and relief personnel and materials were sent to the region with 121 helicopters and 75 aircraft, AFAD said. A total of 26 ships were also assigned to the region for shipping personnel and aid supplies and for evacuating people.
More building contractors detained across Türkiye in wake of twin quakes
More contractors and others responsible for poorly constructed buildings that collapsed and caused heavy casualties in last week’s devastating earthquakes were detained across Türkiye on Thursday, sources said.
In southern Kahramanmaras province’s Turkoglu district, three people were detained within the scope of an investigation regarding buildings that caved in due to the Feb. 6 twin quakes, which have killed over 38,000 people and left over 108,000 others injured.
Another five contractors were detained in Istanbul on the grounds of "killing by negligence" under the coordination of the Kahramanmaras Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
Two more people suspected of being involved in defective construction work were detained in southeastern Osmaniye province. Meanwhile, in southern Adana province, the number of people detained over faulty building work increased to 12.
Separately, two suspects, one of whom is a contractor, were arrested in southeastern Sanliurfa province in an investigation into the collapse of a building that claimed 17 lives. Similarly, a civil engineer who designed a defective building in Sanliurfa’s Haliliye district was also apprehended. The structure's sudden collapse killed 14 people.

World No.1 Iga Swiatek made a triumphant return to competition at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open. Swiatek raced past No.42 Danielle Collins 6-0, 6-1 and is into the semifinals after her quarterfinal opponent Belinda Bencic withdrew from the tournament due to fatigue.
Last season, Swiatek kicked off her 37-match win streak in Doha, where she captured her first WTA 1000 hard-court title. Playing her first match since the Australian Open, the reigning champion showed no signs of rust against Collins, as she built a 3-0 lead after just 10 minutes and pocketed the opening set in just 21 minutes.
No.8 seed Veronika Kudermetova booked her place in the Qatar TotalEnergies Open semifinals with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win over No.4 seed Coco Gauff in 2 hours and 4 minutes.
Kudermetova, 25, also reached the last four at Adelaide 2 in January. She will bid to reach her first final since Istanbul last April against No.1 seed Iga Swiatek, who received a walkover from No.7 seed Belinda Bencic. Kudermetova is yet to win a set from Swiatek in two previous encounters.
The result was Kudermetova's first win over a Top 10 player since her defeat of Ons Jabeur in the San Jose quarterfinals last year, and her 11th in total. Her season record is now 9-3.
Dealing with challenging conditions was a key aspect of the match. Swirling wind caused the ball to move in unexpected ways, and rallies were frequently decided by who could control their technique better in the face of this.
Ultimately, it was Kudermetova's steady, but still aggressive, approach that won out. The World No.11 tallied an even 18 winners to 18 unforced errors, and her ratio remained consistent in all three sets.
By contrast, Gauff's form oscillated more. The American teenager came out on top of several superb improvised points in the second set, finding a series of lobs and passes to deny Kudermetova as she found 13 winners to four unforced errors. However, the first and third sets saw her total 19 unforced errors.
Jessica Pegula is making the most of her second chance in Doha. A day after saving two match points in a thrilling three-set victory over Jelena Ostapenko, the No.2 seed was at her efficient best in a 6-3, 6-2 win over Beatriz Haddad Maia in Thursday's quarterfinals where she will face No.5 seed Maria Sakkari.

Under the patronage of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), in cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Development Program, League of Arab States and the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), will hold a conference on climate change and human rights from February 21 to 22.
Speaking at a press conference to announce the event, NHRC Deputy Chairman Dr Mohamed bin Saif Al Kuwari said more than 300 representatives of countries, international organisations, think tanks, universities, national human rights institutions, civil society organisations and experts will be participating in the two-day conference.
The speakers will include Michel Forst, Larbi Djacta, Mikko Otani, Rafel Yassen Khedr, Auajjar Mohamed, Dr. Elasto Hilarious, Raquel Caballero de Guevara and Max Tunon.
The conference is conveyed to discuss climate change issues from a human rights perspective, and will come up with concrete recommendations for rights-based climate action for the benefit of all.
Kuwari said the conference aims to emphasize the importance of rights-based climate action, highlight good practices relevant to Qatar and other actors and partners, including governments, the UN, Civil society organizations and institution.
He added that recommendations will be made to enhance cooperation to support rights-based climate action all over the world, especially in the Middle East and North Africa region. The established scientific facts confirmed that the climate changes witnessed by the planet are caused by human activity represented by the high percentage of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,
Kuwari said, pointing out that these gases began to gradually decrease after the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which came into
force on January 1, 1989.
The NHRC deputy chairman said the ozone hole began to recover and narrow according to international observatories, adding that climate changes also caused many natural disasters, such as droughts, hurricanes, floods, etc, but the most severe and destructive disasters, according to scientists’ estimation is the melting
of ice, which could cause sea level rise by between 40 and 60cm on average by 2050.
He highlighted that these variables could affect global food security through the drying up of wetlands, and thus the decrease in agricultural yields, in addition to the spread of some diseases and epidemics that could be caused by a rise in temperature.
