Washington, 25 Sept 2025  (Anadolu)

Türkiye and the US signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to deepen their partnership in the nuclear energy field.

As part of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to the White House, the two countries initiated a process that will further deepen the two countries' deep-rooted and multidimensional partnership in the field of nuclear energy, the Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.

"We signed the memorandum of understanding on Strategic Civilian Nuclear Cooperation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the presence of the leaders," the minister stated.

He added: "I hope that the work to be carried out within the scope of the agreement will produce mutual benefits for both countries in the coming period."

US President Donald Trump hailed Thursday bilateral progress during his over two-hour White House meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, teasing forthcoming announcements from both sides.

Trump said the meeting was "very conclusive in so many different things, things that we wanted, things that he wanted, and that was good."

"We'll be announcing that sometime later, and he'll be making an announcement, too, but we had a great meeting with Turkey and their very respected president," he told reporters in the Oval Office. "You're going to really be impressed when you hear what happened today with President Erdogan of Turkey. I think it's great for both countries."

Trump and Erdogan earlier held bilateral talks in the Oval Office before heading into a working lunch in the Cabinet Room.

During their meeting, Türkiye and the US signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen their partnership in the civilian nuclear energy field.

It is unclear which other announcements are forthcoming, but Trump said the leaders would discuss new trade deals and the sale of F-16 fighter jets, as well as the continuation of talks over F-35 fifth generation stealth fighters to Ankara.

Trump said the leaders "had a very good conversation having to do with the purchase of military equipment." Asked specifically if he will be able to make a deal on F-35s, he said: "I will be able to easily if I want."

"It depends. He's going to do something for us," he said.

US welcomes deal to reopen Iraq-Türkiye pipeline

Secretary Rubio says deal, facilitated by Washington, 'will bring tangible benefits for both

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday welcomed the agreement between the Iraqi government, Iraq's Kurdish Regional Administration (KRG) and international companies to reopen the Iraq-Türkiye oil pipeline.

In a statement, Rubio said the deal, facilitated by Washington, “will bring tangible benefits for both Americans and Iraqis.”

“We commend the decisive efforts of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani and senior officials of the Government of Iraq, as well as KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and senior KRG officials, to make this progress possible,” he added.

The secretary underlined that the agreement would “strengthen the mutually beneficial economic partnership between the United States and Iraq, encourage a more stable investment environment throughout Iraq for US companies, enhance regional energy security, and reinforce Iraq’s sovereignty.”

Oil flow from Iraq to Türkiye’s southern Ceyhan Port was halted on March 25, 2023, following an arbitration ruling by the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) concerning oil exports between Baghdad and Ankara.
