The International Conference on 'Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future' is set to begin tomorrow at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. This significant event is being organized by the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar (NHRC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Qatar; the National Cybersecurity Agency; the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR); the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI); Huawei; and other key international players in the digital technology space.

Mrs. Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee, emphasized that the conference will tackle one of the most urgent issues of our time .'Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, raising concerns among human rights advocates worldwide about its potential impact on individual rights', she stated.

Al-Attiyah highlighted the necessity of establishing a legal framework to protect these rights, particularly regarding privacy. She stressed that such a framework should not only safeguard individuals but also regulate companies’ use of these powerful technologies. 'We must ensure that the pursuit of financial gain does not come at the expense of fundamental human rights', she said.

However, Al-Attiyah also acknowledged the positive potential of AI, noting that it can be leveraged to raise awareness and promote human rights globally. 'AI can be a powerful tool for human rights advocacy, providing new platforms for awareness and empowerment. It is vital that we maximize these opportunities', she remarked.

The conference will host around 800 participants, including government officials, policymakers, AI and tech experts, human rights activists, legal and ethics experts, civil society representatives, academics, international organizations, and the private sector.

The two-day program includes an opening session followed by four main sessions on the first day. The second day will feature a plenary session for national human rights institutions, working groups in eight parallel sessions, discussions on recommendations, and a final plenary session.

Twelve key topics will be addressed, including AI fundamentals, the impact of AI on privacy and surveillance, algorithmic bias and discrimination, and AI’s role in shaping freedom of expression. Discussions will also cover governance and accountability, AI policies rooted in human rights, transparency, and mechanisms for redress.

Additional sessions will explore digital justice, equitable access to AI resources, and how AI can support health, education, and environmental sustainability. The conference will also address AI’s impact on security and democracy, the future of work, media, and the economy.

An exhibition will accompany the conference, showcasing AI’s transformative potential, including real-world applications that highlight ethical governance and AI’s role in addressing global challenges.
