An international conference titled ‘Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future’ will be held on May 27 and 28 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Doha, as announced by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) of Qatar. The event is being organized in partnership with several high-profile institutions, including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), the Qatari Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the National Cybersecurity Agency, along with other global experts in digital technology and human rights.

At a press briefing ahead of the event, Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, Vice Chairman of the NHRC, outlined the objectives and scale of the upcoming conference. Around 800 participants expected—including government officials, AI experts, human rights advocates, legal professionals, civil society members, academics, and representatives from international organizations and the private sector—the event is set to become a major platform for global discourse on the intersection of AI and human rights.

Dr. Al Kuwari referenced the 73rd UN General Assembly address by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who underscored the vital role digital technologies play in modern society, while also warning of emerging threats such as cybercrime, digital espionage, and privacy violations. These concerns, he noted, are not confined by borders, making international cooperation essential for effective regulation and risk mitigation.

The conference aligns with Qatar’s national AI strategy, which focuses on six pillars: education, access to data, employment, business, research, and ethics. These pillars aim to ensure that the country’s digital transformation respects human rights while leveraging AI for societal benefit. Qatar’s Ministry of Interior has also adopted AI in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, using it to strengthen national security, protect privacy, and uphold public order.

A key focus of the conference is to foster dialogue among a diverse group of stakeholders, including governments, academia, civil society, and the private sector. The event aims to explore both the opportunities and the ethical challenges posed by AI, examining how its deployment can align with human rights principles, democratic values, and the rule of law.

Discussions will span 12 thematic areas, including AI's foundational technologies (like machine learning and natural language processing), its impact on privacy and data protection, algorithmic bias, freedom of expression, digital access, and AI governance. The sessions will also delve into AI's implications for democracy, the media, job markets, and global justice.

The event will culminate in a proposed Doha Conference Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, aiming to mobilize international cooperation and promote ethical AI development. The conference format includes plenary sessions, working groups, and focused panel discussions.

In parallel, an interactive exhibition will highlight AI’s real-world impact across sectors such as health, education, sustainability, and creative industries. This showcase is designed to encourage inclusive discussions around the future of AI, ethical governance, and its potential to drive positive change, all while safeguarding fundamental human rights.
