Istanbul, 12 May 2025 (Anadolu)
Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines detained former president, seems set to reclaim the mayoral seat in Davao City, Rappler News reported Monday, citing unofficial election results.
Based on unofficial results from the Comelec Media Server as of 10.10 p.m. local time (1410GMT) on Monday, Duterte is in the lead with 617,123 votes, or 61.31% of the total votes cast. His opponent, Karlo Nograles, reportedly trails significantly with 75,869 votes (7.54%).
Duterte previously served as mayor of the southern city for more than 20 years, stepping down in 2016 when he assumed the nation’s presidency, a post he held until 2022.
Duterte was arrested in Manila on March 11 under an International Criminal Court warrant and was flown to The Hague the same day. He is accused of causing thousands of deaths during his so-called war on drugs during his time as president.
