TRNC, 09 March 2026 (Public Information Office)
Hakan Fidan, the Foreign Minister of Türkiye, spoke to the press after the Informal Meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), highlighting regional developments and reiterating Ankara’s position on the Cyprus issue.
Fidan said recent developments in the Middle East have caused growing concern across the region. According to him, OTS member states noted that they are closely monitoring the situation and share a common interest in preventing the conflict from escalating further or spreading beyond its current scope.
Turning to the Cyprus issue, Fidan pointed out that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has held observer status in the OTS since 2022. He described this development as a meaningful reflection of unity and solidarity among Turkic nations.
Fidan also stressed that the ongoing isolation faced by Turkish Cypriots should come to an end, describing it as unjust and inhumane. He said Turkish Cypriots are an inseparable part of the Turkic world and emphasised that supporting initiatives aimed at lifting these restrictions is a historical responsibility for the community of Turkic states.
Statement on F-16 Deployment
Separately, the Ministry of National Defence of Türkiye announced the deployment of six F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets and air defence systems to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
In a statement, the ministry said the move forms part of a phased effort to strengthen the island’s security in response to recent regional developments. The deployment was carried out on Tuesday and includes additional air defence capabilities.
The ministry added that further steps could be taken depending on how the situation evolves in the region.
