Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, a former cricketer turned politician and Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, political party, has been arrested after an Islamabad trial court found him guilty of corrupt practices in the Toshakhana case (Treasury).  He is kept in over 700 years old Attock Fort on the Indus River, border of KPK and Punjab provinces of Pakistan, the super-maximum security prison of the country.

The case involved the selling of precious gifts taken from the government treasury during his tenure as prime minister, and failed to show income in tax returns and he is accused of misusing his authority and of dishonesty.

In his absence from court, Imran Khan was sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rs100,000 for concealing details of the Toshakhana gifts. His lawyers were also absent during the sentencing. The trial court conducted 42 sittings over 11 months, during which Imran Khan appeared only five times and consistently delayed the case through legal maneuvers in the High Court and Supreme Court.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar ruled that the charges against the former prime minister were proven. He stated that Imran Khan deliberately submitted fake details of Toshakhana gifts to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and found him guilty of corrupt practices under Section 174 of the Election Act.

The court ordered the execution of the verdict and directed the Islamabad police chief to ensure Imran Khan's arrest. The judge expressed displeasure at the absence of Imran's lawyers during the hearing, giving them multiple chances to appear in court before delivering the verdict.

Apart from the Toshakhana case, Imran Khan is facing other severe charges, including involvement in 9th May attacks on military installations; Illegally receiving of foreign funds and misappropriation of donations received from non-Pakistani nationals and institutions. He is also accused of corruption in various mega projects and wheat, rice and sugar scams, obtaining land and jewellery in bribe, etc.

The Toshakhana case was filed by ruling party lawmakers and is based on a complaint from the Election Commission of Pakistan. It alleges that Imran Khan concealed details of gifts received from the Toshakhana during his tenure as prime minister and profited from their sales. The issue led to his disqualification by the ECP under Article 63(1)(p) of the Constitution.

Despite legal challenges, the trial court ruled that the reference against Imran Khan was maintainable, leading to his arrest and sentencing in the case.

Imran Khan released his short audio call to his supporters through his Tweet account to carry out peaceful protests throughout the country upon his arrest, however, there was no significant protest seen anywhere in the country.
