The international community is closely watching the rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East, where diplomatic efforts, military operations, and humanitarian concerns are unfolding simultaneously. Recent developments at the United Nations, statements from world leaders, and ongoing military actions highlight the complexity and urgency of the situation.

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s recent attacks on Gulf states and Jordan. The resolution, introduced by Bahrain, received broad international backing, with more than 130 countries supporting it. In the final vote, 13 members of the council voted in favor, while Russia and China abstained.

The resolution reaffirmed strong support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of the Gulf Cooperation Council states as well as Jordan. It described the attacks carried out by Iran as serious violations of international law and warned that such actions pose a significant threat to global peace and security. The document also condemned strikes targeting civilian infrastructure, which reportedly resulted in casualties and damage to non-military facilities.

Bahrain’s ambassador to the UN, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, welcomed the adoption of the resolution, saying it demonstrated the council’s commitment to preserving international peace. He expressed appreciation to the 135 nations that co-sponsored the initiative, emphasizing that the overwhelming support reflects widespread concern about what he described as an unjustified attack against regional countries.

Meanwhile, military tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran continue to intensify. Speaking in a brief interview, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the war against Iran could end soon, suggesting that military strikes have already destroyed most of the strategic targets in the country. According to him, the timing of the conflict’s end largely depends on his decision, although he previously indicated that any conclusion to the war would be coordinated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite these remarks, officials from both the United States and Israel have reportedly prepared for the possibility that the fighting could continue for at least two more weeks.

On the battlefield, American forces claim to have carried out thousands of strikes across Iranian territory. US Central Command Commander Brad Cooper said that more than 5,500 targets have been hit so far, including missile facilities, military infrastructure, and over 60 naval vessels. Among the destroyed assets were all ships belonging to Iran’s Soleimani-class warship fleet, effectively removing that class from combat operations.

According to Cooper, the strikes have been carried out using various precision weapons and have intensified in recent days, with attacks launched from multiple directions. He added that U.S. forces are not only targeting active missile and drone systems but also Iran’s military manufacturing infrastructure to prevent future threats. In one example, American bombers reportedly struck a large ballistic missile production facility overnight.

The conflict began escalating sharply after joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Since then, the violence has led to significant casualties. Iranian authorities say more than 1,200 people have been killed and over 10,000 injured. Among the victims was Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran launched missile and drone attacks targeting Israel as well as neighboring countries that host American military bases.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that the only path toward ending the war is through recognition of Iran’s legitimate rights and guarantees preventing further aggression. After holding discussions with leaders from Russia and Pakistan, Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran remains committed to peace but insists that any resolution must include compensation for damages and international assurances against future attacks.

Inside the United States, the war has also sparked political debate. Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, warned that many Americans are deeply concerned about the growing conflict. Speaking on the Senate floor, he noted that 140 U.S. service members have been wounded since the fighting began, eight of them seriously, while eight soldiers have been killed. Schumer also cited reports of heavy civilian casualties across the region, including the deaths of 170 people at an all-girls elementary school that may have been affected by military operations.

Schumer criticized what he described as shifting explanations from the Trump administration regarding the goals of the conflict. According to him, the rationale has alternated between regime change, dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, and defensive operations. He argued that the American public deserves clear answers about the strategy and objectives behind the war and called for congressional hearings in which senior officials—including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—would testify under oath.

Regional governments are also trying to prevent further escalation. Iraq has made it clear that it will not allow its territory to be used as a base for attacks against Iran. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al‑Sudani conveyed this position during a phone call with President Pezeshkian, stressing that any strikes launched from Iraqi soil would violate the country’s sovereignty. He reiterated Baghdad’s commitment to regional stability and said Iraq is prepared to help facilitate dialogue aimed at ending the war.

Amid the ongoing conflict, humanitarian agencies are raising alarm over the broader consequences. Tom Fletcher, the UN’s humanitarian relief chief, warned that escalating violence across the Middle East is pushing the region toward what he described as a moment of “grave peril.” He noted that the spreading conflicts are worsening humanitarian crises, causing displacement, economic shocks, and increasing demand for aid at a time when relief systems are already stretched thin.

Fletcher also highlighted growing risks faced by humanitarian workers themselves, pointing out that several aid personnel have recently been killed in different conflict zones. He urged the international community to prioritize civilian protection and support humanitarian operations. A global relief plan launched last year aims to raise $23 billion to assist 87 million people in urgent need, but funding remains far below target. Without additional financial support, Fletcher warned, millions of lives could be at risk.

Together, these developments illustrate a region facing both military escalation and mounting humanitarian challenges. While diplomatic efforts continue, the path toward de-escalation remains uncertain as global powers, regional governments, and international organizations struggle to contain the conflict and address its far-reaching consequences.
