The National Committee for International Humanitarian Law of the Ministry of Justice signed Wednesday a memorandum of understanding with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the regional mission for the GCC states based in Kuwait, in order to enhance cooperation between the two sides and exchange experiences in international humanitarian law.
Sultan bin Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and President of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law said in a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the memorandum of understanding comes within the framework of maintaining close relations and fruitful cooperation and exchange of experiences with regional and international committees concerned with the international humanitarian law.
Al Suwaidi noted that the MoU reflects the keenness of the State of Qatar on the optimal application of international humanitarian law by raising awareness of this important law, training and raising the capacities of all target groups, including civil and military educational institutions, proposing new legislative texts or introducing amendments to existing laws, in order to harmonize with international humanitarian law conventions, and to provide guidance for the interpretation of humanitarian norms in order to better protect victims of armed conflict.
He added that the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law will start, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to prepare and organize a program to prepare Qatari lecturers during this year, in implementation of the provisions of the MoU, indicating that arrangements are currently under way to organize this program.
AlSuwaidi said that on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding signed in Kuwait, a meeting was held between the delegation of the State of Qatar and representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross to discuss developments in international humanitarian law at the regional and international levels.
