The Turkish community in Qatar commemorates Democracy and National Unity Day today (Thursday), marking the fifth anniversary of the foiled coup attempt on July 15, 2016.ambassador of the republic of turkey to Qatar Dr. Mustafa Goksu expressed gratitude to the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, Qatari officials, and the Qatari people for their firm stance and support for their democratically elected government and people following the July 15 coup attempt.at a press conference, the envoy said that turkey and the Turkish people would never forget Qatar’s strong support as HH the Amir was the first world leader to call turkey’s president on the night of the coup, condemning the military attempt and emphasiing his full support for democratically elected government.
The envoy said, “Messages of support from friendly countries assisted us in moving on from the trauma of this attack, which targeted the existence of our beautiful country.”
Dr Goksu said that terrorist organization FETO posed a significant threat to their country on July 15, adding that Turkey will not turn a blind eye to those who exploit the country under the guise of religion.the Turkish people, he noted, have done the most to eliminate this threat, demonstrating that they do not recognize any power over their own will and are willing to give their lives to protect their state and democratic gains. “One of our country’s top priorities has been the fight against FETO both at home and abroad,” he said.
The Turkish envoy said that Turkey supported Qatar and its people during the Gulf Crisis, which began on June 5, 2017 and ended on January 5, 2021, “about a year after our country’s coup attempt. these two crises, as well as the two countries’ supportive attitude and position towards one another, have strengthened bilateral relations in all sectors and at all levels”.
He concluded by saying that, despite numerous external challenges, turkey and Qatar have never stopped supporting each other in the face of the coup attempt as well as the illegal blockade.at the end of the press conference, a short documentary was shown that depicted people taking a courageous stand against the coup.
