World Environment Day : Qatar Rail Holds “Plant A Tree” Campaign, Doha Metro Made 28 m Trips Since Launched

To mark the World Environment Day (5th June), Qatar Rail  held an event 'Plant A Tree ' from planting at Airport Park, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME). The Airport park is adjacent to Old Airport metro station on the Doha Metro Red Line.

28 trees were planted, representing 28 million trips made on the Doha Metro since its launch in May 2019.

Through this exciting Green initiative, Doha Metro will plant a tree for every 1 Million customer journeys taken on the metro until World Environment Day 2030. The tree planting initiative seeks to raise the awareness of environmental sustainability, planting trees, and preserving the planet. The trees will provide a visual reflection of the metro’s success in growing ridership and providing greener journeys for all.

Ajlan Al Enazi, Chief of Strategies and Business Development at Qatar Rail said; “Qatar Rail is committed to contribute to a sustainable future, and this initiative will help create a green space legacy for all. These trees will become a visual representation of our inputs to the environmental sustainability agenda, for both this and future generations to come and it will encourage more people to use the metro.

He added: “The number of journeys on Doha Metro have reached 28 million trips, and this is a significant milestone and it is a testament to public's confidence in metro services which are witnessing a gradual increase day by day.” He thanked MME for their contusions support and facilitating the event at the Airport Park.

Mohamed Ibrahim Al-Sada - Assistant Director of the Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, said: “This event comes to mark the World Environment Day in cooperation with Qatar Rail under the framework of the Million Trees initiative launched by MME emphasizing the importance for the environment and increase green landscapes as one of the main pillars within the Qatar National Vision 2030, in addition to supporting the “Plant A Tree” initiative by Qatar Rail.

He said that greening initiatives in general are a pillar that supports the efforts of the Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment aimed at increasing the green landscapes, enhancing environmental sustainability and achieving its strategic plan by 2022.”

The “One Million Trees” initiative was launched by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment in 2019 is a community wide responsibility and it built on active partnerships with our society, the initiative promotes green landscaping to support sustainability and environment. It aims at achieving plant diversity by increasing green spaces, trees and beautiful scenery on the one hand, and to improve the climate by reducing temperature and reduce carbon dioxide emissions to reduce pollution on the other hand.

In view of the key importance of trees in the ecosystem and its ability in mitigating the effects of climate change and enhancing environmental sustainability efforts, the Public Parks Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment always encourages institutions and community members in the State of Qatar to contribute and participate in the Million Trees initiative, astrees have a key role in preserving the ecosystem, and their positive repercussions on human health and enhancing the quality of life.

Doha Metro’s state-of-the art design contributes to greener journeys and supports the nation’s development in line with the Qatar National Vison 2030. The metro runs paperless tickets and works regularly with partners to support and promote environmental initiatives in Qatar, in addition to reducing in the number of journeys made by road, reducing carbon emissions.

Doha Metro is the backbone of Qatar’s integrated public transport system, promoting the use of public transport in the country, and serves as a key contributor in the accomplishment of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
