Amir of State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani inaugurated the Barzan Gas Project at Ras Laffan Industrial City this morning.

Present at the inauguration of over US$ 10 b project were Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani; Speaker of Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim; Sheikhs;  ministers; and management of participating companies in the project.

The Amir of State of Qatar was briefed about various facilities of the mega project during his tour.

The Amir was also explained project's goals in achieving sustainable growth and meeting local gas supply needs.

A documentary film was shown about the various stages of Barzan Gas project completion.

Over $10 b joint venture project initially was agreed to build in 2007  between Qatar Gas and ExxomMobil. However, both the parties signed Joint Venture Agreement (JV) and Development and Fiscal (DFA) agreements in 2011 and construction started in November 2011.

Half of the project was completed by the end of 2012

The JV appointed RasGas as the project manager. RasGas is also responsible for operating the plant.

ExxonMobil has provided project management and technical expertise to the project through the secondment of key personnel to the project management team.

ExxonMobil has also licensed its proprietary Flexsorb SE technology to help the project achieve its 99.4 percent sulfur recovery requirement, the highest in Qatar as mentioned in one of the published reports.

The project accommodates a total of six trains, with two trains being developed in the first phase. The first train was scheduled to come online in 2014 and the second train in 2015.

The project was developed in three phases, with a total capacity of 6.2bcf/d of natural gas. The first phase had a capacity of 1.7bcf/d of natural gas, while phases two and three had a capacity of 2bcf/d and 2.5bcf/d of natural gas respectively.

The project, which includes both onshore and offshore developments, produced 1.7 billion cubic feet a day (bcfpd) of pure natural gas in the first phase. The completion of first phase increased the total gas output of RasGas to 11bcfpd.

As per a report, around 20,000 people have been working in construction work on three Sq. Kms (appx) project.
