Qatar: Nepali Community Forum Marks 31st International Day of Indigenous Peoples

The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities Qatar (NFINQ) recently commemorated the 31st International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples with a vibrant event held under the theme “Greetings Exchange and Cultural Program – 2025.” The celebration brought together leaders from various resident communities, reflecting a spirit of harmony, freedom, safety, and security enjoyed in the State of Qatar.

Dignitaries present at the event included NFINQ President Rakesh Shrestha; Chief Advisor D.N. Magar; Veteran NRN Founder member Sagar Nepal; Community leaders from various resident communities - including Afghanistan, Africa, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and the Philippines; heads of Nepali cultural and literary forums; leaders and delegates from affiliated organizations; the Vice President of the Nepali Women’s Society Qatar; the President of the Nepal Journalists’ Association Qatar branch; members of the International Nepali Muslim Society Qatar; representatives from the National Folk and Dohori Song Institution Nepal Qatar branch; social workers, business professionals, journalists, and a large number of Nepali community members.

The program was formally inaugurated with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony and banner unveiling. NFINQ Senior Vice President Bhaikaji Gurung welcomed attendees, while First Vice President Ekaraj Rai presented the objectives and organizational vision behind the event. The historical significance of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples was highlighted by Siyaram Chaudhary, Advisor and former President of NFINQ.

In his address, Chief Advisor D.N. Magar emphasized the core message of the day, stressing the importance of protecting indigenous rights and fostering unity among communities. Federation President Rakesh Shrestha expressed gratitude to all guests, forum leaders, business representatives, social workers, and the broader Nepali community for their active participation. He reiterated that indigenous rights are not merely slogans, but fundamental rights closely tied to identity and way of life, and pledged continued advocacy for the cause.

Speakers at the event included Dilkiran Shrestha, President of the Nepal Journalists’ Association Qatar; Sushma Khatiwada Katuwal, Vice President of the Nepali Women’s Society Qatar; chairpersons and representatives from various mother organizations; Sagar Nepal, founding member of NRN and noted social worker and intellectual; Lalit Tamang, President of the Gandaki Province Coordination Council Qatar; and Ayush Ghale, President of Dhading Service Society Qatar.

Community leaders representing Afghanistan, Africa, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and the Philippines also addressed the gathering, extending their greetings to indigenous communities and commending NFINQ for organizing such a meaningful and inclusive celebration.

The cultural segment of the program featured traditional performances by local Nepali artists in cultural attire from affiliated organizations. The program began with a joint welcome song presented by members of mother organizations, followed by traditional dances that showcased the rich cultural heritage of Nepal.
