Sri Lankan Embassy Marks 73rd Independence Day of Sri Lanka

THE Embassy of Sri Lanka in Doha marked the 73rd Independence Day of Sri Lanka on the embassy premises on Thursday.

The celebrations started with the hoisting of the national flag by Ambassador-Designate of Sri Lanka to Qatar HE M Mafaz Mohideen. Two minutes of silence was observed in remembrance of all patriots who sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle to protect the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of their motherland.

Speaking on the occasion, HE M Mafaz Mohideen highlighted the sentiments expressed by Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in his Independence Day message covering National Policy Framework of the government, titled ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’. The envoy emphasised the bilateral relations between Qatar and Sri Lanka, expressing hope that ties between the two countries would be strengthened in the years ahead, particularly in the political and economic sectors, among others.

On the occasion, Madam Sumudu Wilpatha, First Secretary at the embassy read out message in Sinhala language from Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa and M. H. R. A. Iqram, Attache at the embassy read out the message in Tamil from Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Dinesh Gunewardene.
Multi-religious observances were conducted by various religious dignitaries representing various faiths in the country including the Buddhism, Hindu, Islam and Christianity.
73rd Independence Day ceremonies were concluded with the serving of Traditional delicacies and refreshments.
