More than 8,000 participants representing UN Member States, the United Nations system, civil society, academia, the private sector, and youth will convene in Doha for the Second World Summit for Social Development. The gathering aims to renew the global commitment to social justice and ensure that people remain at the heart of sustainable development efforts.

Taking place from November 4 to 6 in Doha, the Summit will focus on strengthening international partnerships and advancing inclusive policies that create fair and equitable opportunities for all. This was  announced during a curtain-raiser press briefing for the Second World Summit for Social Development at UN headquarters in New York.

President of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock and Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations H E Sheikha Alya bin Saif Al Thani attended the press conference. Addressing the press conference, Sheikha Alya said, "The Doha Summit offers a unique opportunity to renew shared commitment to social progress and inclusion and to accelerate achievement of the SDGs. It is truly a defining moment for global social development."

Thirty years after the landmark 1995 World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen, the global community will gather in Doha, Qatar, from 4 to 6 November 2025 for the Second World Summit for Social Development.

Convened at the level of Heads of State and Government under a UN mandate, this pivotal gathering responds to a world facing deepening inequalities, profound demographic shifts, and rapid technological and environmental change. The urgent need for a renewed commitment to social progress has never been clearer.

Building on the foundational 10 Commitments and the Copenhagen Declaration, the Second Summit aims to accelerate action on poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, and social inclusion. Its core mission is to ensure no one is left behind in our increasingly complex and interconnected world. The Summit will critically assess progress, identify persistent implementation gaps, and reaffirm global dedication to social development. A key objective is to give new momentum to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, recognizing that social progress is the bedrock of a sustainable future.

In Doha, world leaders will collaborate to redefine strategies for social progress, strengthen global partnerships, and champion inclusive policies that foster equitable opportunities for all. The overarching goal is to build societies that are more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable. The Summit will serve as a crucial platform for dialogue, cooperation, and joint solutions, convening a diverse coalition of governments, international organizations, the UN system, civil society, cooperatives, academia, the private sector, and experts. This inclusive approach is vital for strengthening international cooperation for inclusive social development.

According to the UN portal, the State of Qatar is honored to host this critical Summit. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of Qatar, has emphasized that the convening reflects the nation’s deep belief in multilateralism and global solidarity. As a long-standing partner of the United Nations, Qatar has consistently supported global efforts to promote peace, social justice, and sustainable development. The nation upholds a commitment to human-centered development, both nationally and globally, through investments in education, health, social protection, and decent work. By championing the integration of social, economic, and environmental policies, Qatar adopts a whole-of-society approach that places people at the center of development.

As the world prepares to gather in Doha, there is a shared sense of purpose. The Second World Summit for Social Development represents a definitive opportunity to rebuild trust in institutions, advance social justice, and shape a new course for global social development. The State of Qatar stands ready to contribute to this shared mission and to support a successful and transformative Summit that will chart a more equitable and resilient path for all.

To ensure the success of the second WSSD, the Qatar Centre for Peace and Democracy (QCPD) focus on aligning Qatar's national policies with the ambitious 1995 Copenhagen Commitments. By positioning Qatar as a model of progress and reform, QCPD aims to inspire other participating states to adopt strong commitments.

QCPD advocacy will highlight Qatar's significant advancements over the past three decades while also addressing key areas for continued reform, including: the eradication of poverty, the promotion of decent work, the expansion of social protection, the advancement of inclusive development, and the elimination of inequality for all residents.
