Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani along with his wife Sheikha Jowaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al-Thani, and members of his delegation arrived in London for a Two-day state visit, marking a significant diplomatic event at the invitation of UK’s King Charles III.
The two-day visit is a prestigious gesture, typically extended to nations of strategic importance to the UK. The royal welcome began with a parade along the Mall, where the royal guests were greeted by a number of senior British officials, including King Charles, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and other members of the royal family.
Upon arrival at the Buckingham Palace, the Amir of Qatar was given guard of honour accompanied by UK's King Charles 111.
The visit emphasizes the strengthening of economic, military, and cultural ties between Qatar and the UK. Qatar is a crucial defense partner for the UK, with a joint RAF Typhoon squadron based at RAF Coningsby, and a significant trading relationship, with annual bilateral trade valued at £6.6 billion.
Qatar's investments in the UK are also notable, with stakes in high-profile assets like Harrods, the Shard, and Heathrow Airport. Furthermore, Qatar plays an influential role in global diplomacy, particularly in the Middle East. The country has mediated peace talks related to the Gaza conflict, showcasing its diplomatic reach.
The UK’s ties with Qatar are rooted in historical, cultural, and educational connections. The Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim studied in the UK and attended Sandhurst military academy. Over the past decade, he has visited the UK at least eight times, underscoring the close relationship between the two nations. The visit is also an acknowledgment of Qatar’s recent diplomatic efforts to de-escalate global crises, which further highlights its importance on the world stage.
A key feature of the state visit will be the state banquet at Buckingham Palace, where the King and Emir will address the assembled dignitaries. Notably, this event marks the first time that UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will attend such a diplomatic showcase. While the Princess of Wales will not attend the banquet, the visit highlights the UK’s commitment to continuing strong relations with Qatar, acknowledging the important role both nations play in ensuring mutual prosperity and security.
According to the UK Foreign Office, Qatar remains a vital partner in the UK's efforts to enhance its global influence and economic growth.
It is note worthy that Amir of Qatar and his accompanying delegation were accorded last state banquet at the Buckingham Palace until 2027, as the Palace will be under intense refurbishment program of UK Pound 369m.
All state visits will be moved to the Windsor Castle until refurbishment completes at the Buckingham Palace.
