German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has criticized US President Donald Trump for undermining Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling the tense White House exchange another sign of “a new era of ruthlessness” in today's world.
Baerbock told a news conference on Saturday that, like many others, she couldn't sleep well the previous night after watching events at the White House, where Trump harshly criticized Zelenskyy and claimed the Ukrainian president was not ready for peace.
“Unfortunately, this was not a bad dream, but harsh reality,” she said.
“A new era of ruthlessness has begun. A ruthless time in which we must defend the rules-based international order, and the strength of the law more than ever against the might of the strongest.”
Baerbock voiced support for Zelenskyy's position that any negotiations with Russia should ensure “a just and lasting peace,” not merely a temporary ceasefire without security guarantees for Ukraine.
“No one needs or desires peace more than the Ukrainians. The diplomatic efforts of the US are of course important — but such peace must be just and lasting and not just a pause until Russia's next attack,” the foreign minister said.
“No one should therefore be mistaken about the enemy: He sits solely in the Kremlin, not in Kyiv or Brussels,” she said.
“We can never accept a reversal of perpetrator and victim. Because a reversal of perpetrator and victim is the opposite of security. It is the opposite of peace and therefore cannot be a good deal,” Baerbock added.
She called on European countries to stand up for international law and defend their interests, and provide stronger support for Ukraine.
“We Europeans must move forward more strongly than ever before and resolutely stand up for our interests and international law - without ifs and buts,” Baerbock said.
“For us, therefore, it is clear: We stand rock-solid by the side of the sovereign and free Ukraine. Ukraine is part of a free and democratic Europe,” she added.
A high-stakes meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday ended in a tense standoff, triggering swift global reactions and further straining ties among Western allies.
'Thank you, America. Thank you for your support, for this visit. Thank you, @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine seeks a just and lasting peace, and we are working precisely toward that', Zelenskyy wrote on X, addressing the fallout while reaffirming Ukraine’s commitment to ending its war with Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's plane landed at Stansted Airport, UK following a dramatic confrontation with US President Donald Trump at the White House, witnessed by the global media last night, Sky News reported.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London ahead of a summit on Ukraine. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister's Office on 10 Downing Street.
Zelenskyy will attend a summit on Ukraine to be hosted by Starmer on Sunday with the participation of many European leaders. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will also attend the summit on behalf of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The visit followed a heated exchange between Zelenskyy, Trump, and U.S. Vice President JD Vance. The undiplomatic verbal clash lasted about 10 minutes as Zelenskyy defended his handling of the ongoing conflict with Russia, now in its fourth year.
Following the public dispute, Zelenskyy left the White House, leading to the cancellation of a planned signing ceremony for a critical minerals agreement and a scheduled news conference.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine, emphasizing its fight for democracy, freedom, and sovereignty.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz echoed this, stating Ukraine could count on Germany and Europe in its pursuit of lasting peace. French President Emmanuel Macron reinforced the West’s united stance, calling Russia the aggressor and praising Ukraine’s fight for dignity and security.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assured Zelenskyy, "Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone," while Moldova’s President Maia Sandu bluntly declared: "Russia is the aggressor. Ukraine defends its freedom – and ours."
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store criticized Trump’s rhetoric, calling it “serious and disheartening,” and rejecting his accusation that Zelenskyy was risking World War III. Dutch, Estonian, Polish, and New Zealand leaders reiterated their unwavering backing for Ukraine, with Estonia’s foreign minister warning, "If Russia stops fighting, there will be no war. If Ukraine stops, there will be no Ukraine."
Meanwhile, Trump’s handling of the confrontation drew praise. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban lauded his stance, saying, "Strong men make peace, weak men make war," while White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller called the moment historic, claiming Trump had finally stood up to Ukraine after years of U.S. exploitation.
Calls for unity also emerged. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urged Western allies to avoid internal divisions that embolden adversaries. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reaffirmed their nations’ unwavering support, with Albanese framing the war as a battle between democracy and authoritarianism.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen described the White House exchange as "a punch in the gut for Ukraine," warning that public disputes only benefit one party—Russia.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to “find a way” to mend ties with US President Donald Trump.
Speaking to the BBC, Rutte revealed he had twice called Zelenskyy following a heated exchange between him and Trump at the White House. He also spoke with Trump but declined to disclose details.
Rutte emphasized that Zelenskyy should respect Trump’s past support for Ukraine and called the dispute “unfortunate,” stressing the need to repair their relationship with the US leadership.
Russia on Saturday called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to the US a "complete political and diplomatic failure" for Kyiv. The statement followed a tense meeting between Zelenskyy, former US President Donald Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance at the Oval Office.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized Zelenskyy as “inappropriate, corrupt, and incapable of reaching an agreement.” She accused him of prioritizing his own power, suppressing opposition, and leading Ukraine into a totalitarian state while sacrificing millions of citizens.
Zakharova claimed Zelenskyy refuses peace because it would mean his downfall, insisting that true stability in Ukraine requires addressing the crisis's root causes. Russia, she reiterated, remains firm in its objectives.
'The sooner Kyiv and European leaders accept this reality, the closer we will be to peace', she concluded.
