Dubai, 09 March 2025
India clinched their third ICC Champions Trophy title with a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. This win makes India the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having previously shared the title with Sri Lanka in 2002 and won outright against England in 2013.
Opting to bat first, New Zealand started well as Will Young and Rachin Ravindra built a 57-run opening stand. However, India’s spinners soon turned the game around. Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Young for 15, while Kuldeep Yadav’s googly bowled Ravindra for 37. Kane Williamson, crucial in the semi-final, fell to Yadav for 10, leaving New Zealand at 75/3.
Jadeja trapped Tom Latham LBW for 14, shifting the pressure onto Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips, who put on a steady 50-run stand. Phillips finally broke an 81-ball boundary drought with a six but soon fell to Chakravarthy’s deceptive googly for 34. Mitchell held firm with a 63-run knock before Rohit Sharma caught him off Mohammed Shami’s bowling. A late flourish from Michael Bracewell (53* off 39) helped New Zealand post 251/7.
India’s chase started aggressively, with Rohit Sharma smashing Kyle Jamieson for six off the second ball. He dominated early, reaching a fifty in 11 overs and sharing a record 100-run opening stand in a Champions Trophy final with Shubman Gill. However, Gill departed for 31 after a stunning one-handed catch by Phillips, and three balls later, Virat Kohli was trapped LBW for one by Bracewell.
Rohit anchored the innings with 76 before missing a delivery from Ravindra and getting stumped. Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied the chase with a composed 50-run partnership before Iyer (48) fell to Santner. Axar contributed 29 before Bracewell struck again, leaving India at 203/5.
Hardik Pandya’s six off Ravindra in the 46th over shifted momentum back to India. Though Jamieson dismissed Pandya for 18 with 11 runs needed, KL Rahul (34*) and Ravindra Jadeja (9*) calmly guided India home with six balls to spare.
New Zealand 251/7 (50 overs) – Mitchell 63, Bracewell 53*; Kuldeep 2/40
India 254/6 (49 overs) – Rohit 76, Iyer 48; Bracewell 2/28
Result: India won by four wickets.
